Missouri Arts Council Grant Received!

The Showboat gratefully acknowledges a generous DREAM grant received from the Missouri Arts Council to help fund our March 2009 production of “Gumbo Bottoms, A Big Muddy Musical.”

“Gumbo Bottoms” was written by Missourians Meredith Ludwig and Cathy Barton and originally performed in Boonville, Missouri. Its original cast and crew of 17 played to a total audience of more than 400 at the Showboat Theatre in Hermann on March 7 and 8.

The Missouri Arts Council assists nonprofit organizations through grants that encourage and stimulate the growth, development, and appreciation of the arts in Missouri. The Council recognizes the arts ability to revitalize communities and stimulate economic development. MAC supports DREAM communities in using the arts to redevelop their downtown area.

The Board of  Directors of the Showboat Community Theatre thanks the Missouri Arts Council -- and the senators, representatives, and citizens of Missouri for their support -- from the bottoms of our hearts!

Gumbo Bottoms, A Big Muddy Musical

By Missourians Meredith Ludwig and Cathy Barton

March 7, 2009, at 2 pm & 8 pm

March 8 at 2 pm

If you’ve ever sat on the bank and watched the Missouri River flow majestically past, or squished your toes in rich Missouri gumbo, or hastily moved family and possessions out of the reach of relentlessly rising flood water, this play will speak to you.

The Gumbo Bottoms website tells us about the play: “Set in 1928, Gumbo Bottoms is the story of Vivian Marks, a wealthy easterner, who discovers her fortune has been squandered when her husband dies suddenly. All she has left is a piece of bottomland in Missouri. “You mean ‘Misery’,” Vivian sings in the opening song. Things go from bad to worse when she travels to Missouri only to discover her rich bottomland has been taken by the “Wiley Guiley Mighty MO,” another of the 12 new songs by Ludwig and Barton.

The story continues as big city wealth clashes with rural river life, and basic survival crosses the racial divide. With song and dance, laughter and drama the 90 minute musical delivers a tribute to river life, rich, deep, inspired by stories from the region.”

Gumbo Bottoms is a story of despair, hope, friendship and loyalty. It’s a story about Missouri River folks by a couple of talented Missouri River women.

Review of Hello, Dolly!
(as printed in the Advertiser-Courier, June 25, 2008)

Dear Editor,

At our first Showboat Board meeting of 2008, we decided that this would be a year of new beginnings, growth, greater community involvement, and new blood to bolster a theatre with a golden tradition.

“Hello, Dolly,” the latest presentation at the Showboat Community Theatre, has put an exclamation point on our expectations.

What a glorious performance accomplished by a superb local cast. From the understated, highly functional scenery and the costumes, each one hand created and coordinated to splash a palate of 19th Century color and pizzazz across the stage, to the professional musical accompaniment, the play enchanted the audience with each succeeding number.

What an evening of fine entertainment. Hermann is indeed a “Dream City.”
